Gavin Newsom announced on Friday that California is awarding a new round of funding of $27 million to local governments to support their implementation of substance abuse treatment and mental health service efforts that include Prop 36. • Video above: Governor Newsom speaks on mental health crisis and Charlie Kirk's death

Newsom said building on a multi-billion dollar investment into behavioral health services that focus on treating people who experience mental health and substance abuse disorders comes from the savings of Prop. 47.

"California is tackling crime while investing in programs that address the mental health and drug issues on our streets," Newsom said. "Families have a right to safe streets and communities — and this funding helps us keep that promise."
