(FOX40.COM) – Stanislaus County is racing against the clock to prevent the closure of one of its largest homeless shelters.
The Salvation Army’s low-barrier shelter on D Street – also known as the Access Center Emergency Shelter- was recently given a six-month notice to end its agreement with the county.
This is a move that could eliminate 182 beds if a solution is not found. However, for the people who stay at the shelter, the stakes are high.
Amy Shaw said she has been staying at the shelter for roughly three years and does not currently have any alternative housing options.
“If they close this down, we have nothing. We have nowhere to go,” Shaw said.
The shelter is one of the few emergency-based shelters available in the county and relies heavily on state funding to stay open. But
