CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A congressional committee hearing in Charlotte recently brought intense scrutiny to criminal justice reforms in North Carolina, focusing specifically on ending cashless bail and overhauling the state’s magistrate system.
During the committee hearing, Congressional Republicans repeatedly raised concerns about North Carolina’s magistrates.
Magistrates are appointed positions. They are responsible for setting bonds in many criminal cases, issuing search warrants, overseeing domestic violence cases and more.
“The judicial system here in Mecklenburg County, I can speak first hand, is trash,” Officer Justin Campbell testified during the hearing. “The magistrate system here has no idea what they’re doing. This cashless bail system is a joke.”
