GALLUP, N.M. —
The McKinley County Humane Society won't be running the city animal shelter as of Oct. 27.
A news release from Gallup city manager Frank Chiapetti said the contract with MCHS is being canceled "in response to long-standing and unresolved operational problems." The decision was made in consultation with the Gallup-McKinley County Animal Control Authority, the release said.
There will be no interruption in veterinary services, fostering and adoption. Displaced animals will continue to receive shelter and care. Current employees of MCHS may keep their jobs, and volunteers will still be welcome.
"The step was not only necessary, but will result in an improved shelter and improved and more efficient coordination between animal control and shelter operations," the release said
