GENESEE COUNTY, MI — In the wake of Sunday’s mass shooting in Grand Blanc Township, local officials have declared a state of emergency.

Delrico J. Loyd, chair of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, declared a local state of emergency on Monday, Sept. 29, in support of Grand Blanc Township’s own declaration.

The action was made in response to a shooting that killed five — including the suspect — and hospitalized 10 others at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township.

After driving his truck into the church building, at 4285 McCandlish Road, suspect Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, of Burton, opened fire on the congregation and set the church ablaze.

A responding police officer shot and killed Sanford.
