PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Soybean farmers in Central Illinois could face a looming crisis after China, a major buyer of U.S. soybeans, stopped buying in response to the tariffs.

That has U.S. farmers in a bad spot since the harvest season has arrived, and that major buyer is on the sidelines. Peoria County Farm Bureau Manager Charlie Hensley said farmers are now projected to see lower income levels.

At Peoria’s Farm Bureau, a plan is in place for this year, but if China’s market were to close completely, it would pose a significant problem for agriculture, especially in the Midwest.
