AUKUS appears back on track with new reports today suggesting a Pentagon review will not lead to the scrapping of the deal for Australia to acquire nuclear submarines . These reports from a Japanese newspaper will be music to Anthony Albanese ’s ears, as the prime minister has been under pressure over his handling of foreign affairs in recent weeks.

Sources tell the Nikkei “the review will wrap up before Anthony Albanese visits the White House on October 20”, and that “AUKUS is safe”.

But a US Department of War official tells 7NEWS “the AUKUS initiative is still under review” and there are “no further AUKUS updates to announce at this time”.

Donald Trump ’s Defense Undersecretary, Elbridge Colby, launched the review of the $368 billion deal.
