Alcoa has confirmed the permanent closure of its Kwinana refinery south of Perth, costing the final 220 jobs after the closure was flagged in 2024.
The US-based aluminium giant announced the latest blow to Australia’s metals processing industry, more than a year after axing 750 jobs at the alumina refinery.
“Alcoa operated the Kwinana refinery for a number of years in a challenging environment and made the difficult decision to permanently close the facility after unsuccessfully exploring multiple options for a sustainable path to restarting,” chief operations officer Matt Reed said in a statement on Tuesday.
