MCINTOSH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Five months after hearing the case, the Georgia Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Gullah Geechee communities on Sapelo Island.
The legal battle over zoning on Sapelo Island made its way to the Georgia State Supreme Court in April 2025.
The court heard oral arguments in the three cases dealing with zoning code that allows for larger homes to be built on the island, which is home to one of the state’s last intact Gullah Geechee communities.
Much of the ongoing legal issue stems from a referendum election about the zoning held in fall 2024.
