TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Imelda has become a hurricane as it moves away from the Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday.

Located about 735 miles west-southwest of Bermuda, Imelda is moving toward the northeast at 7 mph.

Maximum sustained winds are 80 mph.

Imelda is expected to move away from the Bahamas Tuesday and quickly approach Bermuda late on Wednesday. The move toward the northeast is expected, followed by a turn toward the east-northeast at a faster speed by that night.

Additional strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours, the NHC said.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda.
