The Northern Delaware Football Officials Association acknowledged that the final play of the Smyrna at Middletown football game on Sept. 26 was incorrectly officiated, but the game result will not be overturned.
For the final play of the game, trailing Smyrna 28-27, Middletown lined up for a 34-yard field goal. The kick hit the back of the helmet of a Middletown lineman and bounced up the field. A Smyrna player attempted to pick up the loose ball around the 10-yard line but did not secure it. Then a Middletown player picked up the ball and ran it into the end zone.
Two officials in the end zone signaled touchdown, giving Middletown a 33-28 walk-off victory . One of the officials then briefly conferred with the head referee, who also signaled touchdown.
