IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A water contact closure has been issued for the Imperial Beach Shoreline after testing confirmed the ocean water in that area contains sewage, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ).

According to a press release issued Monday from the county, the closure is due to water from the Tijuana River flowing into the shoreline and reaching recreational waters. The presence of sewage in ocean water can cause illness if one comes into contact with it.

The shoreline will remain closed until further testing confirms the areas are safe for water contact. The closure begins at the south end of the strand at Seacoast Drive and goes past the Imperial Beach Pier and north of Carnation Avenue.
