BELEVILLE, Ill. - A student at Belleville East High School was found with a firearm on campus Tuesday morning.

According to police, at around 10:45 a.m., a Belleville Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) was notified by a student that another was in possession of a gun at school.

The student was quickly located, and the firearm was taken during a search. They are now in custody, and police say that there is no ongoing threat to students or staff at the school.

The Belleville Police Department praised the student who reported the firearm, emphasizing the importance of speaking up in order to keep schools safe.
