DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts is resigning from his position just four days after ICE agents detained him.
Roberts sent a letter through his attorney Alfredo Parrish to the Des Moines School Board today.
The letter said “Out of concern for his 30,000 students, Dr. Roberts does not want to distract the Board, educators, and staff from focusing on educating DMPS’s students.”
The school board will hold a meeting tonight.
ICE detained Roberts on Friday after he tried to run. They found a gun, knife and $3,000 in cash in the school district car he was driving. He is currently in a northwest Iowa jail.
Roberts is from Guyana, South America and came to the U.S. on a student visa in 1999. ICE officials say Roberts received an order of removal in May of 2024 w
