CONEY ISLAND — Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park has been officially added to the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry, state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton announced Monday.
The 150-foot steel Ferris wheel, built in 1920 by Charles Hermann and the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company, has carried more than 35 million riders without incident and remains a Coney Island landmark. It was designated a New York City Landmark in 1989 and marked its centennial in 2020.
Purchased in 1983 by Denos D. Vourderis, the Wonder Wheel became the centerpiece of the family-run amusement park that bears his name. The Vourderis family continues to maintain the ride, which has inspired replicas at Disney California Adventure and Dreamland Yokohama.
