NEW LONDON, Conn. (WFSB) - Thousands of federal workers in our state could be impacted by a government shutdown.

Eastern Connecticut has many federal workers. About 8,000 of them report to the sub base in New London.

At the sub base, many of the workers are considered essential, which means they will still be working if the government shuts down. Others may be furloughed.

If a shutdown lasts longer than two weeks, federal workers may not get paid but will get backpay once a deal is reached.

“People who are deemed non-essential, it’s a real slap in the face in my opinion,” said Rep. Joe Courtney, (D), District 2. “Obviously, things get delayed. People aren’t at work, and jobs slow down.”
