MADISON (WKOW) -- AARP Wisconsin hosted an event at the Goodman Community Center in Madison to help protect people against fraud.
"Scam Jam" is meant to help make you aware of recent and current scam attempts.
Leaders say that scams can impact everyone, but the impact is especially hard on older people.
"The fact of the matter is, when older folks lose money to a scam, they tend to lose more money, and it's more detrimental. It's harder for someone who is not working to bounce back from a financial loss," Courtney Anclam, a senior program specialist for AARP, said.
AARP says even technologically savvy people need to be on the look out for red flags.
Legitimate organizations do not pressure you to act immediately. They recommend you pause and assess the situation first.
