WINDSOR, Conn. (WFSB) - Long before Salem became synonymous with America’s witch trial hysteria, the first known execution for witchcraft in the American colonies took place in Connecticut.
The year was 1647, and the small, fortified town of Windsor was gripped by fear and suspicion.
While a wooden palisade protected the town physically, it offered no defense against the rising tide of paranoia.
At the heart of Windsor, where the town green now stands, some of the earliest witchcraft accusations in colonial America took root.
It’s where we met historian and author Beth Caruso, whose book One with Windsor tells the story of Alys (Alice) Young, the first person executed for witchcraft in what would become the United States.
