PORTLAND, Ore. — The deployment of Oregon National Guard troops in Portland will cost an estimated $3.8 million, according to state officials. Federal tax dollars will pay for the deployment of 200 Guard members, Russell Gibson of the Oregon Military Department testified Tuesday before a joint legislative subcommittee in Salem.
The cost estimate, Gibson explained, is based on a 60-day mission, along with 20 extra days before and after deployment. The estimate does not include meals or lodging costs.
Roughly half of the 200 Oregon National Guard members who have volunteered for deployment are current law enforcement officers, Gibson explained. None of them are current police officers or deputies in Portland or Multnomah County.
