PORTLAND, Oregon — The U.S. government entered into a partial shutdown Tuesday night, after the 11:59 p.m. deadline passed in Washington, D.C., with lawmakers at a stalemate.

The shutdown — the first since 2018-2019 — could mean layoffs, furloughs and working without pay until the shutdown gets resolved for millions of federal workers. Experts suggested the shutdown could have a big impact on the economy as lawmakers try to clear one specific and divisive hurdle: affordable health care. The Republican-led Congress failed to extend tax credits in the Affordable Care Act.
