The Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday it is reviewing the 2005 death of journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson at the request of his widow and with support from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
The review is intended to provide an independent perspective on the case, according to a news release. Thompson, 67, died Feb. 20, 2005, at his Woody Creek home of what investigators at the time determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The death was ruled a suicide.
Pitkin County Sheriff Michael Buglione said there is no new evidence suggesting foul play, but that the office wants to address lingering questions.
“We understand the profound impact Hunter S. Thompson had on this community and beyond,” Buglione said in a statement. “By bringing in an outside agency for a
