NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Amid the National Guard and a dozen other agencies’ arrival in Memphis this week, a state senator is questioning the legality of their deployment.
The National Guard began setting up command stations in Memphis on Monday as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force. Nine arrests have been made so far, and two illegal firearms have been taken off the streets, according to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
But Tennessee Senator Jeff Yarbro, District 21, says the deployment of the National Guard is unlawful. He held a press conference Tuesday morning following a letter he sent to Tennessee’s Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti.
