OMAHA, Neb. —
Omaha firefighters rescued people from an apartment complex late Tuesday night.
A fire started in a kitchen of one of the units at the Whitehall Condominiums, near West Dodge Road and Burke Street.
Fire investigators determined food left unattended on the stove sparked the fire.
There was severe damage to the one unit, as well and smoke and fire damage to other parts of the complex.
Overall, 27 units were damaged. A team with the Red Cross is helping the people living in those units find another place to stay.
Battalion Chief Mickey McLaughlin said firefighters helped elderly residents and people with mobility issues out of their apartments and to safety.
McLaughlin said one person was injured after they fell. There were no fire-related injuries.
