The police chief of Cheverly, Maryland, shot and killed a man who was suspected in a stabbing, authorities say.

Chief David Morris and Cheverly Police Department officers were in Riverdale on Tuesday afternoon to investigate a stabbing earlier in the day in Cheverly, the town of Cheverly said in a statement.

Officers saw a car in the 6600 block of Greenland Street that was associated with the stabbing suspect. Morris had an encounter outdoors with a man “believed to be the suspect, who was armed with knives.”

“The suspect charged Chief Morris,” who opened fire, the town’s statement said.

The man died at the scene. His name was not immediately released.
