New Delhi: Astronomers have peered into the core of an baby galaxy, at a distance of 12 billion lightyears from the Earth, and discovered that the supermassive black hole was ten times smaller than expected. The observations indicate that astronomers have been overestimating the sizes of supermassive black holes from the infancy of the universe for years. If confirmed in other galaxies, the research would solve the puzzle that has mystified scientists for years, the discovery of supermassive black holes from a time period in the early universe, where black holes simply did not have sufficient time to grow so massive.
The study has been selected for publication in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The observations the research is based on was carried out by the GRAVITY+ collaboratio
