The federal government is partially shut down as of Oct. 1 .This means that though "essential" services like the military and Social Security will remain operational, other "nonessential" services like custodial work in national parks will not, leaving trash in public lands to pile up.
The partial government shutdown came as a result of President Donald Trump and Democrats emerging from a private White House meeting on Sept. 29 without an agreement to keep the federal government open.
This shutdown also comes at a time when the White House is considering layoffs rather than temporary furloughs. In past shutdowns, workers were paid back for their time off when the funding dispute was resolved, but it's not clear that will happen this time.
