Hattiesburg Police say an early morning armed robbery reported on Sept. 30 was staged, and both the supposed victim and the alleged gunman are now in jail.

Officers responded around 4:45 a.m. to the 6700 block of Highway 49 after a report that a man entered a store, showed a weapon, and demanded cash. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Detectives reviewed evidence and determined the incident was fabricated. Investigators say the “victim” and the “suspect” conspired together.

Police identified the pair as 25-year-old Lacarreon Jackson and 26-year-old Devin McPhail. Both were arrested and charged with one count of Armed Robbery and one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony. They were booked into the Forrest County Jail on Sept. 30.

The investigation remains active.
