LANSING, Mich. — State officials are warning residents to be on alert for government imposter scams that could surface during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, scammers may try to exploit people's anxiety over the status of federal benefits during the government shutdown by posing as government officials during fraudulent calls, texts or emails.

Nessel stated that while her office has not yet received any reports of shutdown-related scams, bad actors may attempt to trick people with false claims involving Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or SNAP benefits. The goal of these personnel is often to steal personal information or money.
