HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A paddle-out has been scheduled to honor the well-known young waterman who was killed in the Waimanalo crash in September.

The paddle-out will take place on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. at 1038 Mokulua Dr., in Kailua. Event coordinators say there will be limited parking at Lanikai Park nearby.

Fullerton “Hopena” Pokipala was born on Dec. 20, 1994, and he passed away on Sept. 20, 2025.

Police said Pokipala was driving a utility task vehicle northbound on Hihimanu Street at around 8 p.m. when he disregarded a posted stop sign at the Kalanianaole Highway intersection.

As a result, police said he collided with a 74-year-old motorist traveling eastbound on Kalanianaole Highway, causing the utility task vehicle to roll over.
