CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A teenager was killed in a shooting near a busy Charlotte shopping center on Wednesday.

The shooting happened on Metropolitan Avenue near South Kings Drive. One person suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting, according to Medic. He was later pronounced dead, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The victim was later identified as 16-year-old Alexander Cruz Martinez.

Officials did not state the exact address where the shooting happened, but said it happened in the 900 block of Metropolitan Avenue, which features several shopping locations, including a Target and a parking deck within the same structure.

An off-duty officer was in the area around the time of the shooting and provided care to the victim at the scene, according to CMPD Major
