NEW CANTON, Ill. (WSIL) -- Law enforcement responded to an active situation in New Canton, Illinois on Thursday morning.
The Pike County Sheriff's Office informed the public that law enforcement were in the area working to safely resolve the matter.
Residents were asked to remain indoors until further updates were provided, the sheriff's office said.
Officials at the Hull Kinderhook Fire Protection District urged the public to avoid traveling through New Canton until the area was deemed safe.
The fire department echoed the Pike County Sheriff's Office and urged residents to stay in their homes and lock all doors.

New Canton has a population of more than 300 people and is roughly 26 miles south of Quincy along Illinois Route
