Former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts has been arrested by the U.S. Department of Justice more than a week after he was detained pending deportation by immigration authorities, according to law enforcement officials.
A native of Guyana, Roberts was transferred from the Woodbury County Jail, where he had been held pending deportation after initially being taken to the Pottawatomie County Jail, his attorney confirmed.
Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan said in a Facebook posting around noon Thursday, Oct. 2, that Roberts "was taken into custody by the U.S Department of Justice on a Federal warrant for his arrest."
