Thursday at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair (ENMSF) began with judging of breeding heifers, followed by the Land of Enchantment Market Beef Show.

During the judging, youngsters led their animals before judge Miles Tones, with many of the boys and girls pulling on the reins of animals which dwarfed the kids in size.

Brandon Kirkendall may have been among the busiest people in the arena, and he had his hands full during the heifer show as several of his children were competing and winning championships during the event.

“We've been showing a bunch of market Herefords all over the country,” he said.

But he Eastern New Mexico State Fair has a special place for Kirkendall.

“We really like it,” he said, "It's our home fair, it's always been good.”
