TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Elected leaders from around Alabama gathered in Tuscaloosa this week as the Alabama League of Municipalities hosted a regional orientation meeting.

More than 200 people, primarily from west Alabama, attended the two-day conference where they learned about ethics laws and what they’re allowed as elected officials.

These meetings are held once every four years following most municipal elections, but this is the first time that the meeting was mandatory, according to Sherry Sullivan, the president of the Alabama League of Municipalities and mayor of Fairhope.

This is the first year where it’s now required that newly elected municipal leaders in Alabama get 40 hours of training during their first term.
