Syracuse, N.Y.— A man found guilty of fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend tearfully told her family Friday in court that he never meant to hurt her.

Maurice Giles , 31, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for recklessly causing the death of Kimberlin Gatewood , 27, at 1521 S. State St. on May 3, 2024.

Before he was sentenced Friday morning, Giles cried as he told the court that he thinks of Gatewood daily.

“I miss her every day of my life, now and forever,” Giles said.

He told the court and Gatewood’s brother that he never meant to hurt her.

Prosecutor Caitlyn Buckman said that it was clear the shooting was an accident but said this could have been avoided if not for Giles’ “stupidity.”
