Kitchener Rangers captain Cameron Reid had his back to the play and was approaching the end boards in his own zone Friday night at the Aud.
Owen Sound attack forward Harry Nansi was in pursuit and delivered a nasty check from behind that sent the Nashville Predators prospect flying into the dasher boards.
Reid struggled to get up and had to be helped by team athletic therapist Nick Lichti before he gingerly skated off the ice and to the dressing room late in the first period.
Nansi was sent to the sin bin with a two-minute minor penalty.
