PHOENIX — When NHRA drag racing star Doug Herbert lost his two young sons, Jon and James in a tragic highway crash in January of 2008, his grief led to determination, inspiring a mission to help prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak.

“I don’t want any other parent to get this phone call,” said Herbert. “We’re going to teach these teenagers to be safer and better drivers.”

Herbert founded B.R.A.K.E.S.

"B.R.A.K.E.S. stands for 'Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe,” said Bredon Short, a driving instructor.

“We have our car control recovery which is our skid path,” said Short. “We have our crash avoidance course, and we have our panic braking course, and in our panic braking course, we also incorporate distracted driving."
