An investigation by officials of the Tamil Nadu Drug Department at Shreeson Company's Kanchipuram unit has revealed that Coldrif cough syrup is adulterated with 48.6% diethylene glycol. This is a poisonous chemical.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) is set to take strict action against Shreesan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif cough syrup, after 14 children in Madhya Pradesh died within 27 days due to consumption of the medicine. All victims were between one and five years of age.

The first suspected case linked to Coldrif emerged on August 24, with the first child death reported on September 7. Over the next 15 days, six more children died of kidney failure, bringing the total death toll in Chhindwara to 14.
