A massive rescue operation is underway in Tibet after a severe snowstorm left 1,000 people stranded on Mount Everest. ‌

Local villagers and rescue teams numbering in the hundreds have been mobilised to clear snow and restore access to areas above 4,900 metres, as per reports in Chinese media. It's believed that nearly 1,000 individuals are trapped on the eastern slopes of the mountain on the Tibetan side. ‌

Some tourists are thought to have already been rescued. The heavy snowfall began on Friday evening and intensified on the popular eastern slopes frequented by climbers and hikers. ‌

Chinese state media reported that the Blue Sky Rescue team in Tibet received a distress call after tents collapsed under the weight of the heavy snow. There are concerns that
