A massive overhaul could see up to 6,000 Post Offices closing for good. Under the proposed changes, 6,000 of the nation's 11,500 Post Offices may be compelled to permanently shut their doors.

The branches most at risk are those operating part-time, only a few days a week, as well as those sharing facilities with other establishments. These branches have been labelled "unsustainable" in a new government document.

The Labour Party government's Future of Post Office consultation, which concludes today, is examining the service provided by the Post Office and how to "modernise and strengthen" the network. It states that over half of the Post Offices nationwide have become financially unviable.
