Goaltender Colten Ellis, who was set to be the No. 3 goalie in the Blues organization this season, was claimed off waivers by Buffalo on Monday afternoon.

Ellis was the team MVP at AHL affiliate Springfield last season, and was going to be the Thunderbirds' starting goaltender if the Blues would have been able to send him to the AHL. Instead, Ellis will land in the NHL with Buffalo.

Sabres projected starter Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, leaving a need for Buffalo in the crease.

Last season, Ellis posted a .922 save percentage, the fourth-best in the AHL among qualified goalies. After starting the season behind Vadim Zherenko on the depth chart, Ellis took over the No. 1 job in Springfield around the start of January. Ellis would have been the first optio
