On Saturday, more than 1,300 Midlands residents continued the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease at the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s — part of the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

At the Columbia event at Segra Park, participants honored those affected by Alzheimer’s with the Promise Garden ceremony. During the walk, each participant will carry brightly-colored Promise Garden flowers, each color representing their personal connection to the disease.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who lost his father to Alzheimer's and whose mother in law is currently fighting the disease, spoke to participants before the walk began.
