PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- State Rep. Bob Craven announced Monday he has resigned as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and won't seek another term, as fallout continues from his disastrous four-day campaign for attorney general.

In a statement, Craven said he had made the decision "in the best interests of my family." He also said, "While I will continue to serve the people of North Kingstown through the end of my term, I will not seek re-election."

Craven, a 69-year-old North Kingstown Democrat, launched his long-planned campaign for attorney general one week ago but abruptly ended it on Thursday amid new scrutiny of a 2001 domestic violence incident.
