BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The elevator that reopened last week at the Bennington Battle Monument is closed again.

The state said it was back in operation on Thursday, but then stopped working on Saturday around noon. So, now it’s closed again until further notice.

We’re not sure what led to the closure.

Staff at the monument say they’re disappointed, but they hope people will still visit the visitor center and ground floor of the monument, which are open and free to visit through the end of the month.

The 306-foot monument commemorates the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington and is the tallest manmade structure in the state.

A recent maintenance review revealed cracking and excessive moisture. Officials said drying the waterlogged limestone could cost up to $10 million.
