A body has been recovered in the search for a 15-year-old swimmer in north-west New South Wales.

A multi-agency search of the Peel River began in Tamworth on Monday night after police were notified at 7:40pm that the teen had not resurfaced after entering the water.

The Peel River is the main river system that runs through Tamworth and is often used for fishing and recreational water sports like kayaking.

Family members watch on as divers joined personnel from Oxley Police District, ambulance and SES this morning to search the area near Scott Road and Peel Street, near the town's centre.

The body was located at 8:30am and is yet to be identified, but police believe it is the missing teen.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
