Dry woodland and gusty winds are fueling a wildfire in Roscommon County that has grown to about 85 acres as of Monday, said Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials.
The fire was reported Sunday afternoon near the Clare-Roscommon county line, in the area of Houghton Lake and the Roscommon State Forest Area, Michigan DNR said in a press release.
“Crews have been working through difficult terrain to contain the fire,” said Jeff Vasher, DNR's protection manager for the Lower Peninsula, in the release. “High winds have made suppression challenging, but firefighters are holding the lines and continuing to reinforce containment.”
Local fire departments are helping DNR battle the blaze, which is raging in a marshy area of mixed pine and hardwood, officials said.
