Ann Arbor scooter riders may soon need to prove they’re sober before going for a late-night ride, after the Ann Arbor City Council unanimously approved a new contract with Spin , an electric scooter and bike-sharing company, in June aimed at reducing impaired riding. Michigan law considers the operation of any vehicle under the influence “Operating While Intoxicated,” a misdemeanor for the first offense.

The deal requires Spin to add late-night sobriety checks through its app. The company will also be required to provide new helmet discounts, faster response to complaints and safety education events, in addition to reporting injury data to the city.
