SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Calls are mounting for Scottsdale school board member and State Senator Carine Werner to resign. She is accused of making demeaning comments about a district employee.

Parents and students say they heard what she said during an August meeting, calling her comments "cruel and inappropriate."

At the time, a district employee was presenting on nutrition services. Werner appeared virtually, and attendees say they heard remarks about the presenter's weight.

"She's like morbidly obese," Werner is accused of saying during an Aug. 5 meeting.

Tuesday night, efforts to get Werner to resign are expected to continue at another SUSD board meeting.

More than 1,500 signed a petition, demanding she resign.

The district’s last regular meeting was in September. Werner wasn’t there,
