The Illinois Department of Revenue has issued a warning of a new nationwide scam targeting taxpayers.

The latest text message scam targets people with "fraudulent messages that appear to come from state revenue or treasury agencies."

According to the IDOR, the phishing scheme involves "unsolicited, urgent text messages" that claim a tax refund has been processed and that users need to provide their banking information or risk losing the refund.

"There has been a significant rise in fake text messages impersonating state revenue departments," IDOR Director David Harris said in a statement.
