ROSCOMMON COUNTY, MI – Firefighters are still working to contain a wildfire that has caused considerable damage since it began over the weekend near the Roscommon State Forest Area.

The wildfire began on Sunday, Oct. 4, and as of approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 95% of the fire had been contained, said Jeff Vasher, Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Lower Peninsula resource protection manager.

The fire is burning just east of old 27 at the Clare and Roscommon County line and has spread to 101 acres of forest, Vasher said.

About half an inch of rain fell on the wildfire area beginning late on Monday, Oct. 6, but it was only enough to slow the fire down temporarily.
